Yoga for Runners - 10 Essential Yoga Postures for Athletes
Sunday, July 12th, 5-7pm
Triyoga, 6 Erskine Rd, London NW3 3AJ  (map)

How many yoga postures are there?  Like many things in yoga, it depends who you ask. In essence, most yoga postures fall into one of 6 basic families -- forward bends, side bends, back bends, balances, twists, inversions -- and move through one or more of the 3 planes of motion.  A well-rounded practice is possible in just a handful of postures, but creative variations allow for a legendary 8,400,000!

If you already spend a good deal of time running or training for another sport, you need to make choices.  In this workshop we will explore the way the runner’s body moves, and look at the range and planes of motion of 10 key yoga postures (and variations) that complement and enhance running action, creating strength where you need it and releasing tension where you don’t. After the essential alignment and benefits of each pose are understood we will have some fun weaving the 10 postures together in a dynamic flowing sequence.

Yoga for Runners - Core Flow Yoga
Friday, August 14th, 7:30-9:30pm
Triyoga, 6 Erskine Rd, London NW3 3AJ  (map)

Core strength is essential for efficient and safe peripheral movement in the limbs and prevention of injury.  It also contributes to balance and power, handy for off road running and hill work.  Many large movements are supported by the abs and back, and other muscles tire and joints are stressed if the core is weak or compromised.

In traditional sports training, there’s a tendency to think of core work as “chore” work, involving isolated abs or back exercises.  In yoga, we approach the being as a unified whole, engaging the belly in almost every active posture.

In this workshop we’ll look at 3 basic types of breathing (Chest, Lateral and Abdominal) and how to breathe without tension when the abdominals are engaged.  We’ll also focus on technique, while creating mindful awareness of this important energetic centre.  The main body of the workshop, however, will be a non-stop ‘power’ yoga sequence, integrating core-challenging variations to the practice, simultaneously cultivating upper and lower body tone and flexibility beneficial to a range of sports.
